Frequently asked questions
Fiber internet uses fiber-optic cable to provide internet service to your home. The fiber-optic technology is transmitted as light signals and is capable of carrying a greater amount of data at faster speeds than traditional or coax cable. This means a faster and more reliable internet connection than cable.
Fiber internet is up to 2.5x faster than cable, with gig speeds that support a fully connected home with multiple users at the same time. And with symmetrical upload and download speeds, real-time gaming, video chat, large file sharing, and remote working are a breeze.
Viasat Fiber plans do not require an annual contract, which means there is no minimum service term commitment. You will have a month-to-month service term, which you may cancel at any time without an early termination fee.
Prior to installation:
If fiber service is available at your location, you'll be able to purchase the service and schedule an installation appointment. After purchasing service, you'll need to sign the electronic customer agreement. This must be signed before installation can begin.
Prior to your appointment, a member of the install crew will visit your home to develop your installation plan. You don't need to be home for this.
The day before your scheduled appointment, you'll be contacted to confirm your appointment.
Day of installation:
The install crew will contact you to confirm your appointment. During your appointment, the installer will discuss site requirements with you and will help choose the best and least intrusive location for the fiber conduit to enter your home. Before beginning work, the install crew will review the installation plan with you and ask you to sign it.
There will be equipment installed on the outside and inside of your home, all of which will be set up for you during your appointment.
- Network Interface Device (NID): A small box will be installed on the outside of your home to bring the fiber connection from your neighborhood to you.
- Optical Network Terminal (ONT): This is a device that will be installed inside your home, and also act as your router, providing your home with Wi-Fi access. This device will also come with a power cord.
Once you are comfortable with the installation plan, the install crew will dig a trench from the street to your home to lay the fiber conduit. Then a hole will be drilled for the fiber conduit to pass through to your home, which will be covered by the NID. The fiber will then be connected to the ONT inside your home.
Installation will typically take 2 - 4 hours to complete. Once complete, the area where the trench was dug will be restored, and you will be asked to sign off on the work completed.
Someone over the age of 18 must be present during the installation.
